CODE_n SPACES FAQ

Where can I find CODE_n SPACES?Where can I find CODE_n SPACES?

The first CODE_n SPACES were integrated into the new GFT Corporate Center in Stuttgart (34 Schelmenwasen Street). The SPACES are now being extended into the neighboring building.

Further CODE_n SPACES are planned for other European cities in the coming years.

Why is GFT located at Stuttgart’s Fasanenhof and not in the city center? Why is GFT located at Stuttgart’s Fasanenhof and not in the city center?

Many of our CODE_n partners are located in the greater Stuttgart area or are scattered across Germany. The location of the Fasanenhof so near the airport and highway junction makes it ideal – everything is just a few minutes away. A U-Bahn (tram) stop is coming soon, which will create a direct connection to the airport. Even Stuttgart’s main station will be on the direct tram line with no need to change trains. Unlike the limited space available in the inner city, there are so many options for future developments here in the city’s former business district – and that fits perfectly to the CODE_n motto.

Why should companies – new or established – apply to CODE_n SPACES instead of other facilities? Why should companies – new or established – apply to CODE_n SPACES instead of other facilities?

The thing that makes CODE_n SPACES so special is that the residents become part of a complete ecosystem. It’s an ecosystem made up of industrial partners, mentors, universities, other startups, and much more. Direct access to resources and partners is just one of SPACES’ crowning features. What’s more, startups become part of our worldwide CODE_n network, which opens doors even beyond our SPACES.

For corporate partners, SPACES offers a place to work on ideas and new business models, far off from rigid company processes. Input from our founding residents can work wonders for getting thought processes going in new directions. This creates a win-win scenario for both types of resident.

There are already numerous initiatives and places for startups on offer. Is CODE_n SPACES really necessary? What makes you different? There are already numerous initiatives and places for startups on offer. Is CODE_n SPACES really necessary? What makes you different?

We aren’t an accelerator or merely a landlord. CODE_n speeds up innovation, whereas accelerators focus on the development of companies. Other initiatives are often furthered by academia or research.
We’re filling a gap that no one has previously filled. We do this by focusing on the development of innovative business models, allowing our fundamental target group of startups and established companies to take center stage with their fresh ideas and open-minded approach to innovation. They become part of a network that really bears fruit. We provide the platform and framework, but the individual residents develop their respective business models independently.

We also set ourselves apart by focusing on digital innovation. The catalysts for this can be people with disruptive ideas, be they representatives from the creative industries or executives who have a pioneering spirit.

In what ways do you support the startups at CODE_n SPACES, and for how long?In what ways do you support the startups at CODE_n SPACES, and for how long?

This will vary depending on the development phase of the startup and the existing skills within the team. However, all of the startups have access to the fully equipped office space and communal areas, in addition to mentoring services. They also have easy access to our partners and corporate residents. All of this is embedded in a creative yet professional workplace setting.

Do startups have to pay for these services?Do startups have to pay for these services?

As all other startups in the economy, they have to pay rent – but this is subsidized. An office measuring 20 square meters costs 500 euros per month. We do offer additional financial support, particularly to young startups, through an additional 250 euro discount. This helps them get things going and gets them off the ground faster.

How do startups get a place? Are there application deadlines? How do startups get a place? Are there application deadlines?

Startups can apply online at www.code-n.org. Our team personally gets in touch with the applicants. If a startup has the right potential, we invite it to come visit our SPACES. The right chemistry is important and we have to share the same visions. That’s the only way to grow our network and allow members to inspire each other.

There are no application deadlines, since the contracts are drafted individually for each startup. The minimum amount of time offered is 3 months.

Does a startup application have to meet any specific conditions?Does a startup application have to meet any specific conditions?

It has to win us over: we have to be convinced that the company’s digital business model and team have genuine potential. In a nutshell, the CODE_n ecosystem is one big family and the chemistry has to be right.

Many large corporations have their own broad selection of programs and initiatives focusing on startups. Why should they get on board? Many large corporations have their own broad selection of programs and initiatives focusing on startups. Why should they get on board?

Because it’s essential to see the big picture in order to stay competitive internationally. We offer neutral ground, where everyone is in it together as a partner of equals. A platform where everyone tows the same line, as partners in the spirit of innovation and not as competitors.

Furthermore, it’s a chance to establish the Stuttgart region as an innovation hub and thus to strengthen the future sustainability of the region. Larger corporations in the area certainly benefit from this.

The first SPACES at 34 Schelmenwasen Street were based on a very special design concept. Will this also apply to the new SPACES II?The first SPACES at 34 Schelmenwasen Street were based on a very special design concept. Will this also apply to the new SPACES II?

SPACES II will have its own unique flair, but it will tap into the proven elements of the first SPACES. SPACES II will not offer the flexibility of moveable cubicle partitions. We view this expansion much more as a chance for our residents to grow and expand instead of merely being an extension to the floor area. Even startups grow and expand and the number of employees brought in through corporate innovation teams also increases as their concepts begin to unfold and flourish. These are the people we will serve with the new offices.

Will there be a network for CODE_n alumni? Will there be a network for CODE_n alumni?

Yes, that’s one of our goals. Our aim with all of parts of the CODE_n initiative is to build an extensive network of digital pioneers. Our alumni benefit from a host of ways to find new partners and investors through CODE_n – and to take the next steps.

What’s the relationship between SPACES and CONNECT?What’s the relationship between SPACES and CONNECT?

CODE_n CONNECT is an online platform where both new and established companies can register and present themselves with their own custom profiles. This helps them find the right collaboration partners. We call this digital matchmaking. SPACES on the other hand is a actual physical environment where innovators are literally in the same place to work with one another on the topics that will shape the future. Both elements uniquely drive the main idea behind CODE_n in their own way, but they work completely independently.
